Tea Drinker

I’ve never been much of a tea drinker
Always liked my coffee strong
Until anxiety slowly blanketed me
Caffeine had to be given up cold
Started raiding health food store aisles
For kava, passionflower, valerian root
Chamomile, peppermint, lemon and ginger
Something to lower the adrenalin
To help me fall asleep alone
I’d drink the tea out of chipped porcelain mugs
Kind of like my chipped heart
The steam would warm my face and fog up my glasses
I’d gulp it too fast and burn my tongue
It would blister the next day
I’ve always had a problem with impatience
Remembered a time you’d make me tea
Laugh and say, “you gotta sip it slow”
I wanted to drink in your laughter
Now I know what makes the perfect cup
